Module 1: Applying Mayer’s Principles to Screencasting

In module 1 I created a screencast using Screencastify to showcase my presentation I designed to teach those about physical activity in Canada. Please see the link below for a copy of my screencast!

While creating my screencast I remained mindful to apply the various Mayer’s principles examined in this module. The ones that I found intuitive were redundancy and signalling. I tried my best to incorporate redundancy by avoiding using large blocks of text in my presentation. I aimed to include only the keywords, phrases, and graphics on the screen to draw the listeners’ attention to the important concepts I would be describing. Rather than overwhelming them by having them focus on reading big blocks of text. As a student, I prefer to listen to the instructor lecture about the material being taught- rather than just reading off the slides. As I find, I will not pay as much attention during class and can miss key points. So I can appreciate keeping words on the screen to a minimum. Additionally, I think I did a good job by applying signalling to my presentation. I used arrows where I could connect key bits of information and graphics. Also, I tried my best to use transitions in my speech. I also find this principle helpful in class, as a cue let me know the teacher is finished with one topic and moving on to the next.

Things I found challenging while creating my presentation were applying the voice and coherency principles. I found it much more difficult than I anticipated to apply fluction in my tone of voice. I found some points I came across as monotone and dry. I have done many presentations in the past and very had this problem. I even tried recording the presentation a few times, however, this is one of my first times creating a screencast, so this is something I need to work on for the future. Moreover, I struggled with the coherency principle. In the past, I have made presentations with included lots of fancy images, transitions, and text. So, I found it challenging to keep it simple and stick to the basics.

When creating my screencast, I tried my best to keep the information simple and easily digestible- so it could be tailored to a large audience. I tried my best to include information for all Canadian populations and age ranges so, that anyone could view my presentation and take away some knowledge. This being said, I made sure the graphics I chose were inclusive and diverse. Additionally, my word choice on-screen was concise.

Overall, I had lots of fun making this screencast. I learned a lot and gained much more appreciation for how all the theory and effort it takes to teach an audience effectively. For future screencast presentations, I will be more mindful of my voice projection and try to apply Mayer’s principles I didn’t get a chance to try in the project.

Introductory Post!

Hi EDCI 337,

My name is Nina! I recently graduated with a degree in biopsychology at UVic in Spring 2023. I am a returning student looking to pursue a master’s or potentially even a second undergraduate degree, however, the area of my studies is currently undecided. Thus, I am returning to take a few courses I have a practical interest in before applying for future programs!

I am thankful to be born and raised in beautiful Victoria, BC. Some hobbies I enjoy doing are playing soccer, riding my bike, and watching movies. I also love photography! When I have free time I love exploring different places around the city on my bike and taking pictures of all the interesting things I see.

I enrolled in this class and am potentially considering a career in education- and wanted to explore the field of education and what it has to offer before committing to further my studies in it.

This is my first time working with the various platforms we have explored in this introduction section- as well as my first every blog post! It took me some time to get familiar with the different features of the program, but, everything seemed to be fun and easy to work with after a while.

I look forward to getting to working with and getting to know everyone this semester!
